Victory over Man City and Premier League title in Liverpool’s hands
- Liverpool beat Manchester City 2-0 in the Premier League on Sunday night.
- The “Reds” are the sole leaders, leaving their opponents 9 points behind.
- Arne Slot ‘s team has a high chance of winning the title this season.
Liverpool’s 2-0 win over Manchester City at Anfield in the Premier League on Sunday left Arsene Slot ‘s side nine points clear of second-placed Arsenal and Chelsea, and 11 ahead of the Citizens.
Arsenal, runners-up for the past two seasons, and Chelsea, who have outperformed new coach Enzo Maresca, are tied in second place after their wins this weekend, with Pep Guardiola ‘s Manchester City now down to fifth in the table.
“It’s a good position to be in (top),” Slot said after the game. “You know better than me that teams like Arsenal and Man City can win every game from now until the end of the season. Chelsea can win every game as well.”
“It makes the Premier League very interesting because there are so many good teams here. Last season, the points difference between Arsenal and City was huge during the season, but they (City) still managed to come back.”
Opta’s ‘supercomputer’ has predicted that Liverpool have an 85.1% chance of winning the title this สมัคร ufabet season after Slot, who replaced former German coach Jurgen Klopp last summer, has made an incredible run, winning 11 of his first 13 Premier League games.
Meanwhile, the 46-year-old slot also set a record by collecting 34 points, which is the most as a manager in the first 13 games in the Premier League, equaling the record set by fellow Dutch
coach Guus Hiddink with Chelsea in the middle of the 2008-09 season.
Only two other teams have finished top of the Premier League table by nine points after 13 games – Manchester United in 1993-94 and Chelsea in 2005-06 – and both have gone on to win the title.
Liverpool defender Joe Gomez said: “At the start of the season, if you said we would be in this position, I would have said it was ridiculous straight away. But where we are now, it means nothing. At the end of the season if we don’t lift the trophy, it will feel like a big missed opportunity.
Meanwhile, only three teams have ever won the Premier League after finishing 11 or more points behind the leader – Arsenal in 1997-98 and Manchester United in 1992-93 and 1995-96 – and given Liverpool’s current form, it’s hard to see them slip up, and Manchester City themselves are not in the form to catch up.
Former Liverpool defender Jamie Carragher, who plays as a pundit, concluded: “I don’t think Manchester City have a chance to come back now. They could lose another four or five games between now and the end of the season. It reminds me of Liverpool two years ago and now City could be fighting for the top four first.”
